I have a Canon 350D and would like to improve the qualities etc of my
pictures.
Is there a critical analysis group available

Thank you

There are some excellent books out there. Try your local library.
Most libraries have a number of books on photography. Focal press is
a good publisher- take a look on the shelf for one or two of theirs.
But there are a number of other good ones. Kodak also has published
some good photo books.

Also, see if there is a local camera club in your area.

Agreed. These folks are sincere in their constructive critizism and will
always provide encouragement to those without "professional" skills.
Another useful NG where binaries can be uploaded for critique if you
have not built a web site or have other on-line resources is
alt.binaries.photos.original

Some of the web picture hosting suppliers, such as Flickr, have
special interest groups where members post and criticise each others
pictures. I can't speak for others, but Flickr has mmany of these,
specialising in different kinds of subject matter, different kinds of
technique, and different kinds of camera. Like newsgroups, some of
them seem to be ok Smile

You could always post the links here and ask for opinions.

This is wishful thinking. There are times when newcomers are given the
help they need but there are better places to find real help, most only
a google search away. This is a great discussion group and there is
great useful critique and information to be had, however the high level
of trolling and personal battles can sometimes leave you scratching your
head.

I once went to a photgraphy workshop in which the instructor said that
everyone is born with 10,000 bad pictures inside. Before you can start
taking good ones, you have to take all the bad ones.

Let's hope that that was a good opinion, and not one of the
instructor's first 10,000 bad ones. Smile

I do agree to a degree, however. It's also true for virtually all
fields of interest, where the adage "practice makes perfect" is
usually equally valid. It's perhaps a little harder for "practice
makes perfect" to be as valid for photography, because some people
aren't concerned enough about improving their skills, and won't take
the necessary time to inspect and evaluate their shots, but will
keep on happily snapping. Anyone that goes to the trouble to pay in
time and money for a photography workshop, however, is very unlikely
to be one of those 'happy snappers'. Smile

Have a look at http://depreview.com and at their discussion forums.
There is one forum that is devoted entirely to Canon DSLR cameras.

I'll second that. While there are a few morons, there are some really
excellent people at dpreview who love to help. Try posting to the Lighting
group, too.
