| Do you value slightly heavier duty camera body or better glass?
I don't always agree with PopPhoto but I do when they wrote about the D80
"what was Nikon thinking"? They gave away the innards of the D200 in the D80
for about $900 less.
Unless you regularly trek in remote, poor weather places the answer to your
question is not hard to decide.

No, nobody is going to be able to answer such a question because
it is far too ambiguous.
What is it you want to do with the camera? What focal length
lenses are you interested in? The more detail, the better.
And don't worry about your English, because you *obviously*
speak my language better than I speak yours!

Good advice, though slightly overstated. The D80 is not a D200 in a
smaller body. The D200 does almost everything slightly better; the
question is whether it is worth $900 more. That depends on whether you
use the additional features on the D200 a lot.
Now, I do regularly trek in remote, poor weather places. Actually, I
live in them. My D70, which is not even as good as the D80, never
hiccuped. Of course, I worry less about the D200. But for ease of use
in taking a lot of pictures, the D200 is way ahead of either the D70 or
the D80.
If most of your pictures are going to be in programmed mode and you
don't plan to do a lot with the Advanced Lighting System and you don't
need the faster multiple shot capabilities of the D200, then the D80
and better glass is the way to go. >> Stay informed about: D80+better 2,8 aperture lens or D200 @ 3,5 lens?? |

A faster (2. lens does not always mean a better lens. Depending on your
needs, and lighting conditions, some slower lenses can be much sharper.

Yes, another good point. And a lens with VR can be sharper than a
faster lens without it. >> Stay informed about: D80+better 2,8 aperture lens or D200 @ 3,5 lens?? |

It depends on your investment in non-AF glass. Replacing my non-AF lenses
with AF counter parts is going to be a lot more than the difference between
a D80 and a D200.

That's a choice only you can make.
I'd get a D80 and better lens myself, because the image quality will be
better.
But - if I didn't already have Nikon lenses, I'd buy neither the D80 or
D200 at this time. I'd wait a few weeks and buy a Pentax K10d when it's
available. As I don't need 5 fps burst mode of the D200, the K10d has a
better feature set - yet costs even less than the D80. >> Stay informed about: D80+better 2,8 aperture lens or D200 @ 3,5 lens?? |

This doesn't make much sense. It is true for extremely wide lenses (f/1.4 or
faster). But f/2.8 is not that extreme.
With Nikkors, the f/2.8s are more often than not 'high-end' designs, whereas
the slower lenses tend to be designed for consumers. I'm not aware of a
single f/2.8 Nikkor where a slower Nikkor is much sharper.

It depends on what is important to you - there is a pretty comprehensive
summary of the D80/D200 differences at
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d80/vs-d200.htm
Note that the division between "Important", "Moderately Important" and
"Minutiae" are purely Ken Rockwell's own, you should read the full list and
make your own mind up what differences are important. To me the most
important advantages of the D200 are its ability to work with AI lenses (a
decisive advantage in my case), much bigger buffer and ISO and exposure and
metering modes in the viewfinder (not, like Ken, because I like change these
things with my eye to the finder, but because I tend to forget I have
changed them). The most important advantages of the D80 (to me) are price
and better battery life.

And even if you didn't own any MF lenses, the price difference between
manual-focus AIS lenses (which work on the D200 but not on the D80) will
very quickly cover the difference. Assuming, of course, that you're
interested in lenses. >> Stay informed about: D80+better 2,8 aperture lens or D200 @ 3,5 lens?? |
