This is the fastest of the low threshold; if the light is not enough, the
camera will shift to higher ISO instead of using a slower speed. 1/250
should be fast enough for any auto mode. Unless you use a 600mm lens in
which case you would like to by-pass the auto function all together. But
that's just my opinion.

Personally I hardly ever use it. Only when I'm in a situation where light
changes a lot. But generally I'd rather know the picture is razor sharp with
no noise and sacrifice a little DOF, then higher ISO.
Besides, sometimes I get away with shooting at 1/15 out of the hand, other
times (when I've been walking uphill for example) I'm too shaky and need a
faster speed.
So in my case I can't set a minimum shutterspeed, because it varies with the
situation I'm in.

Then again: you have the D3, so you got no worries about ISO Wink

IS TRUE, THEN
- "there were no pro users before auto-ISO"
- "people shooting film (including, large format) nowadays cannot
be pros"
- "Ansel Adams didn't use auto-ISO, therefore he was no pro"
ARE ALSO TRUE.[1]

However, if "All the pros use auto-ISO" is true, it does not
follow that "those who use auto-ISO are pros".[2] Rita may use
auto-ISO ...

[1] A => B ===> ¬B => ¬A
("if A then B" forces "if not B, then not A")
A: "is a pro"
B: "uses auto-ISO"

This is logic 101, which is mathematics, which many people
don't even want to grasp. Ask your maths teacher if in doubt.

[2] A => B =/=> B => A
"All women are humans" =/=> "all humans are women"

Logic 101.

Ah, another one to fail Logic 101.

FREE! hint for you:
If some claim leads by logic to results that are simply wrong
and you cannot refute the logic, the claim must be wrong.
