Hi, I'm a Contax - fan, but I've used only classic cameras (139, 167,
RTS,). I would like to try G2 system and I'm looking for any opinion
on this, both on G2 camera itself and lenses.
Thanks all

Superlative lenses, amongst the best you can get anywhere; pretty well
everyone agrees on this. I have seen claims that the 35mm is not quite
as good as the others, but as I don't have one I can't comment; I have
the 21, 28, 45 and 90, and I can testify that they are all as good as
their reputation. The 21mm, superb though it is, requires a
supplementary viewfinder (supplied) which is slightly fiddly.
The body generates more dissent. Some love it, others hate it. It is
highly automated for a rangefinder*; faster to use than a Leica but
considerably noisier. Some claim to have problems getting accurate
autofocus; all I can say is I have never found it so.
Given that you are stuck with the body, and it does generate mixed
feelings, then I suggest you try to hold/use an example before you
commit, and read what others say on the usual review websites. If you do
get one, be prepared to spend a little longer than usual getting good
with it - there's nothing difficult, just that some things (like
changing lenses, using the AF to best advantage etc.) take a couple of
minutes, and (horror) even a look at the instruction book. I suspect
half the people who criticise the camera do so because they have not
troubled to RTFM.
In conclusion, I have had one for 3-4 years and think it is excellent. I
don't use it often, as it is less flexible than an SLR system, but it
(body + 2-3 lenses) makes a perfect companion for a day out when I don't
want to carry the weight of an SLR system.
*Some fanatics will insist (frothing at the mouth) that the G2 is not a
rangefinder camera. However, since it uses the same split-image
triangulation method as the Leica bodies (only difference is that it is
automatic instead of manual) I have never understood the point of their
ravings.

A lucid analysis of the matter and a quite exhaustive answer,
confirming the high quality of this forum, the opposite of the most
famous italian's one that I don't follow more because of this. Many

I have just bought a G1 which is more or less the same thing. I have only
shot a few films with it and my first reaction is that you have to be very
careful when focusing and to use the focus lock carefully. There is no
clear feedback that the camera has focused on what you want. It gives an
indication that the autofocus has worked and the approximate distance but I
would like to know exactly what it has focused on and you only get that info
with an SLR or with a mechanical rangefinder. I have to say that I am not
happy with this aspect of the camera.
Everything else is great though. If it weren't for this point it would be
the dogs bollocks. The cash saving compared to a Leica is great though,
especially if you use wide lenses. Maybe I'll get more into it when I shoot
some more.
I have the 35, 45 and 90 lenses and all seem of comparable quality to me.

Not a G2 user, but I will offer my usual recommendation- buy used!
I don't know what Italian camera equipment prices are like- i've been twice
in the last two and a half years and didn't go in a single camera shop
(although Swiss prices are astronomical!)- but in the UK the G series lenses
are very inexpensive used. The G1 body fetches a good deal less than the G2-
sometimes less than half, as there was a reported focus error in the G1.
A British used retailer (www.ffordes.com) has the G2 Millenium kit (body,
28/45/90/flash) kit for £1250, or 1870Euros (of course, this is before
subtracting UK value added tax, and adding postage and any taxes/charges) or
the individual elements can be bought for somewhat less. Here's an
indication:
G2 Body + 45mm lens £550-600
28mm £225
35mm £200
35-70mm £550
90mm £180-210
Flash £100
G1 body £230-300
and www.xe.com can provide currency conversion

David is but a handful of people here who know what they say. More
likely than not he'll be labelled "an idiot" by TP/T.P./T. P for
liking the camera body and calling it a rangefinder instead of a "P&S
unworthy of the lenses" as the latter has claimed for a million times.
The G2 has improved AF and a higher flash sync speed (1/200, quite
handy for daylight fill flash) than the G1. The obvious trade-off is
size.
This is an indispensible page:

I have not used the system extensively, but I can't see any advantage
at all over a good used M Leica. M3 and M4-2 "user" Leicas are
available at comparable prices or a little more. They are all
mechanical and very rugged. They will last fifty years and if you buy
'em pre-beat-up they won't decrease in value much. Ever.
When the current cheap money runs out, collectibles prices may crash
and used Leicas may become considerably more affordable. There's also
the Voightlander bodies which are not the equal of the Leica, but they
are reasonable cameras in their own right. Finally, there's the Fed-5
which s no miracle of craftsmanship, but a good one does give superb
image quality when well wielded.
I wouldn't buy a G1/G2 or a Hexar because to me, they defeat the
purpose of classic camera photography. But that's just me. >> Stay informed about: Contax G2 system |

The G2 has a flash sync of 1/200 sec. - not slow by any standards. I believe
the Hexar RF might have 1/125 sec. flash sync (I'm not sure) which would still
be quite useful. I would say that 1/60 sec. and below should start to be
considered slow, but that's my take on it and a 1/60 sec. flash sync to someone
who shoots in low light all the time with flash might not bother that kind of
photographer. The D70 has a normal (electro/mechanical) flash sync speed of
1/500 sec. I can't wait to see if a Nikon N85 with that flash sync speed for
normal flash (and wireless iTTL high speeed ratio flash sync) comes into
existence. The N80 is coming up on 4 years old and is due for an update (so are
the F100 and F5) but as to when we'll see anything interesting in AF bodies
from Nikon (_other than digital_ DSLRs and ZLRs) is anybody's guess...

Lewis, I rather assumed the previous poster was referring to the Leica M
series - I'm not an expert, don't they have a 1/60 synch speed??

It's actually a bit slower: 1/50. Only the M7 has HSS when used with
a particular, humongous Metz flash but only in manual flash mode and
power is considerably decreased - so it just about evens out the
advantage of higher sync speeds.
Nikons, Contaxes (up to 1960s) and LTMs are no better and probably
even worse (e.g. the LTM) in this regard. >> Stay informed about: Contax G2 system |

Leica M's, as far as I know, have sync speeds of 1/50 sec. due to their
horizontal focal plane shutters (though the M7, I believe gets around this with
a much reduced output continuous series of pulses that enables it to sync at
speeds as high as 1/1000 sec.).
On another note, the poster was referring AFAIK to the G2/Hexar as having
excruciatingly slow x-sync speed, though maybe I read him wrong, or there was a
miscommunication somewhere, but I don't think so...

Many many advantages of the Contax G2 system!
- modern film loading, auto advance up to 3-4 fps, power rewind
- fast and accurate auto focus (once you know how to use it!)
- easy dial-in exposure and flash compensaton
- much faster shutter speed, and much much faster flash synch
- Zeiss glass equal to (or better !) than Leica equiv focal lengths at a
fraction of the cost
- entire used system in excellent to mint condition costs about the same as
an M body and one L lens

what purpose? to have manual everything and extremely slow, unusable in
daylight, flash synch speed? >> Stay informed about: Contax G2 system |
