I've just bought an EOS-400D. The manual says you can use non-Canon
flashguns with it but I can't work it out!

The gun (a Starblitz) fires correctly on another camera's hot-shoe. I've
been throught all the menus and options on the EOS and there doesn't seem to
be anything to set and I've tried all the shooting modes. It seems to
recognise that there's a external gun attached because it refuses to flip
open the built-in flash.

Anyone here use an EOS with an external, non-Speedlite? What am I doing
wrong?!

TIA,
R.

I hope that is a low trigger voltage modern flash. I believe that
flashes with high trigger voltages can damage the flash circuits in the
camera.

What is the flash not doing? Is it not firing? Or is it firing but not
exposing an image??

Maybe the Starblitz is firing on the Rebel pre-flash. The shutter is
still closed then. The Wein safe-sync might be able to help with that.

Thanks for your replies. The problem is, it's not firing at all on the EOS.
It fires okay on other SLRs. It's not a dedicated unit for another camera.

I've read the comment in the manual about using both camera and flash in
manual mode at 1/200 sec, but my Starblitz obviously hasn't read the manual!

Thanks again for your suggestions but unfortunately, as I've already warned
my Financial Advisor, it looks as though I will need to buy a Speedlite.

There are other choices, for that camera.
Sigma makes the EF 500 DG Super that will work very well with the
400D, and it sells for $239 at B&H.
BTW, I use this flash with my 30D.

I use a Sunpak with the Canon 30D. Work great.

Are the SLRs it fires on digital or film? Canon or otherwise? Non ETTL
enabled flashes will not fire on Canon Digital SLRs, as far as I know.

That doesn't mean that you have to buy a Canon Speedlite. Sigma, Sunpak and
Metz make flashes that will function properly on your camera. Metz,
particularly, is considered by some to be superior to Canon's own flash
units.

I just tried my old 540EZ and my daughter's Rebel Xt, and it does not fire.
It is a Canon dedicated flash, just not for the ETTL enabled cameras.

From http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/#faq4
"Canon digital cameras can only use Canon Speedlite flash models with names
ending in EX. If your Canon flash unit has a model name which ends with E or
EZ or anything else then it will not work with any Canon digital EOS
camera."
