Post subject: Canon EF-S lenses on EOS IX
Archived from groups: rec>photo>equipment>aps (more info?)

Hi all,

Has anybody experimented slapping the new EF-S lenses on the EOS IX?
I am particularly interested in the possibility of using the new EF-S 17-85
IS which is meant for the APS-C size digital cameras.
I have been using the 28-135 IS w/EOS IX for years and it worked well.
However, it lacks the wide angle coverage and I sometime had to use 20/2.8
but even that one was not wide enough in certain situation. New EF-S 17-85
IS seems ideal. It should mount on the EOS IX and I suspect there is no
image circle issue. However, the lens distance register (would be shorter
on EF-S lens. Also, it might interfere with the mirror of the EOS IX.
The only way to confirm this is to actually mount this lens on the EOS IX
but so far, I found no opportunity for it.

Any experience or opinions?

Thanks,

Ken

The Canon APS camera bodies use the EF mount, so EF-S mount lenses
simply don't fit. If they would, they would offer very nice lens
solution for IX & IX 7/Lite, if you limit framing to the smallest one,
c. The h and p framings are wider than the sensors in the current Canon
DSLR bodies, so the imaging circle of EF-S mount lenses is probably too
small for them.

Hi Jouni,

Thanks for your reply.
I thought that EF-S will "mount" on any EOSs except that it probably has a
longer rear protrusions due to a shorter lens register (focusing distance).
So, I thought the only issue was the possible physical interference with the
mirror.

Incidentally, while searching for the answer to this, I stumbled into;

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/tutorials/efs-10d.html" target="_blank">http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/tutorials/efs-10d.html</a>

Depending on the amount of rear protrusion, perhaps (and I hope) similar
hack could be done on 17-85 (or hopefully no such hack would be necessary.
I looked at the mirror box of IX and seemed as though there might be enough
clearance for the smaller IX mirror to clear the lens rear). But I do
understand the possible limitation to only the APS-C image circle (I still
wish to experiment though), and if so, I have to wonder if it is worth my
while to hack this lens although I intend to use the lens for my future
purchase of Canon DSLR (presently using Pentax *ist Ds).
Oh, well..... Smile.

Cheers,
