I suppose it's possible.
If you (or the original poster) go to
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1032
and search for "5D 16GB" (without the quotes), you'll find that some people
have succeeded in using 16GB cards with 16GB seen and used by the 5D by
formatting on either a PC or another camera. But some people have had
problems doing that.
So my recommendation would be to just put up with the 8GB limit.
When the 5D came out, a 4GB card cost around US$500 (more like US$900 in
Japan), and the geniuses at Canon probably (a) forgot that Moore's law would
go through at least two generations before the 5DII came out, and (b) didn't
think that anyone would be putting a US$2000 card in a US$2500 camera. (Were
there even 16GB cards available then? The 5D is getting painfully long in
tooth.)
FWIW, my 5D locked up once shortly after I got it, refusing to write to the
(4GB) card. I was using a new card that I had not formatted in the camera.
After reformatting the card in the camera, I've not seen that problem again
in over two years of use.
The general advice with pretty much all dcams is that one should only use a
card that has been formatted in the camera.
