Although B&H Photo for once can't get its act together and is now saying it
anticipates delivery in June, and is very annoyed when you call to ask them
when they might be able to sell you a $4,499 body, I am happy to report that
my local camera shop received 4 on Friday. Now, all 4 were gone by 10:30
Saturday morning (I got #4) but the 1D Mark III is in fact shipping. They
are arriving. And I have this beautiful beast sitting on my desk along with
a new 580 EX II flash, also shipping in quantity but selling fast.

Take heart - they are here.

Chris

Thanks, but B&H has its "act together" just fine. What we don't have
is a freightcar full of this highly anticipated and eagerly sought
camera. If Canon and Canon USA had their collective acts together,
perhaps all their authorized retailers would know precisely when each
shipment would be sent and how many cameras each would include.

As you, of course, know...B&H isn't alone in this plight.
My 1D3 is on its way to me as I type this, but the place I bought it from
(paid for it nearly three months ago) had a waiting list of over
300...pre-paid(!). I was number 14.

-How many did they receive this morning??
....A grand total of 20.
-Good news for me and 19 others...but really bad news for the remaining 280.

We know it isn't your fault, Henry. Wink

-Mark² (A huge B&H fan...who would have bought it from you had you had a
waiting list...)

PS- You might want to consider that waiting list, since, as I was dealing
with this other company's list...I ended up also ordering another $6K worth
of gear from them in addition to the 1D3 (You were sold out of the Canon 500
f4 L and the 580EX II...Again...not your fault).

Henry -

My problem with B&H is, any time (and it is rare) that I deal with a human
on the phone instead of the Web site - or even the one time I was in the
store - it was as if B&H was doing me a favor by being on the planet, except
upstairs in the used department where they were very nice. I don't want to
be talked down to when I approach the B&H throne. A little courtesy goes a
long way to opening the wallet.

That said, I just ordered the 1D Mk III battery that my local dealer did not
have from you, and last month I got a 16-35L from you but only because you
had it and the price - on those items - was right.

Dial the arrogance back a notch and you could have had $11,342 in Canon
equipment from me this year - all of which went to my local camera store
because you all think way too highly of yourselves. You never know when the
guy on the other end of the phone is some rich prick with a photography
habit... (and yes, I know you are so successful you could give a hoot
whether I buy from you or not - that's business)

Chris

Why should they create a list? They sell all relavent inventory in spite of
a list. I get on lists [like from Amazon] and end up annoyed. I just put my
email address in the notification at B&H and wait for the email to arrive.
Much less stressful and much to my preference.

I'm sorry you only end up annoyed.
As for me...I ended up with a 1D3 in time for my long trip over-seas.
Lists aren't so bad.
re-read below for an example of why lists can be a benefit to sellers...

I often do that...but for such a high-demand item, they would have been gone
before you or I could even respond.

I did just find extra 1D3 batteries at B&H, and ordered them a few hours
ago...

Curious... when B&H has been out of stock, a phone call is all it takes
to place a backorder (i.e., pre-order it). Are you saying they don't do
this for new product releases?

(I'll second the experience with Amazon; I've had pre-orders there ship
later than if I'd just ordered it real-time on the release date.)

Sounds like an industry problem. Nikon still doesn't say when or how many of
the 18-200 Nikkors they will be shipping Wink

BTW ... thanks Henry, this lens I bought from you is wonderful!

Note likely as B&H seems to send the email alerts very early and I check email
very early as well. Also, if I am waiting for a specific email, I often have
alerts sent to my cell phone when it arrives.

I am glad you found something you were looking for. For me ... I still like
the lack of a waiting list better and hope that B&H doesn't change that.

Yeah? What'd Henry have to do with the lens's wonderfulness?

Since we're all talking to Henry on a first name basis now,

"Henry, when the Canon 40D comes out, can I go downstairs with my laptop
and a compact flash card and test all the 40Ds to see which one has the
least noise, especially banding noise? I'll use a USB connection to leave
the file numbering alone".

Well, I tried.

Is this maybe a New York to <somewhere else> culture clash issue? I'm
from Minnesota, but I've never found the people on the phone for B&H
anything but professional and polite.

I did once order an entire new camera system (for the appalling sum of
$2700 -- far and away the most I'd ever spent on camera equipment at
one time) in two minutes, but that was just efficiency. I knew what I
wanted, they understood what I said, we run the order through. (Two
Olympus OM-4Ts, various prime lenses including the 24mm shift, a
couple of Vivitar zooms; in 1987).
