Have about $800 to spend and looking for a digital camera. I've used
very small ones in the past and hate how easily things can get blurry
from shaking. I've been told to get at least 8 mpg and 8X zoom. Is
that correct? How about SLRs. And what about Leica glass? A friend has
a sort of generic named camera with a Leica lens and takes great pics.

The days of cheap gas are long gone. Look for 30-35mpg at least. Better yet,
buy a hybrid.
Seriously, you will have to say what kind of photography you do before
anyone can advise how to spend your $800.
By the way, your friend takes great pictures because he is a good
photographer, not because he uses a Leica-branded lens.

1) it will not take anywhere near $800 to get 8x zoom and IS (Image
Stabilisation). There are many EVF (Electronic ViewFinder) cameras that
meet those criteria for around $200-300. If you look at those, though,
you will want to actually look through the EVF - several models have very
low resolution EVFs which are very 'pixelated'. A good buy would be a
Kodak P series - they've been discontinued, but are still sometimes
available refurb from the online Kodak store e.g. P850 has 12x zoom,
shoots raw, tiff, jpeg for around $225 (though it's only 5mp - which
should be adequate unless you plan to print 3x4 feet posters).

If you're looking at DSLRs, you'll play hell trying to get anything close
to 8x with decent lenses for under $1000.

nikon d40 & 18-135mm is about $700 and d40x with same is about $800.
if one doesn't mind two lenses, the 18-55/55-200vr kit is another
option.

Thanks for info - I stand corrected, though 135/18 = 7.5 which is less
than 8.

Plus a 50mm f/1.8 is $800 so you can really take advantage of the SLR.
