I enjoy close up work with 35mm but now I have moved to MF using a Bronica
with a standard 75mm lens I can't get close enough.
Other than getting a macro lens what are my best alternatives? The cheapest
seems to be close up filters attached to the front of the lens ( less than
£30 secondhand) but what would quality be like?
I use B/W and colour neg film and enlarge to a max. of 12" x 16".
Advice will be much appreciated.
Cheers
Jeff

Be sure and use a good lens shade with the closeup lenses as they are
prone to increase flare levels.
Other than the closeup lenses extension tubes are the next bet. They
should give you generally sharper pictures than the closeup lenses and
only a macro lens can do better. The only thing to watch for is using
a handheld meter, you have to apply a bellows factor to it to get the
correct exposure. The closeup lenses compensate for this by shortening
the true focal length of the lens system. TTL metering reads the
actual light arriving through the steup.
After that if you want to get extreme is the Automatic Bellows
available for a pretty steep price. I have one for the SQ camera and
it's nice! You just can't use it with TTL flash without doing a bit of
workaround with flash connectors back to the body. Again TTL metering
with your prism will get accurate exposures (barring reciprocity
problems)
Heres a link to my workaround if you are interested.

Thanks Gary.
I think I'll bin the screw on close up filter idea and save up for an
extension tube.
Cheers
