Someone was looking for gaffs in The Aviator? We just saw it. Good film!
While I'm no nut for finding errors, I did notice a couple instances where
it was clear the photographer was hitting the hot flash button instead of
the shutter. I'm not sure how many of those flashes were real, but some
were. I liked the fact that so many of the photographers had a single, white
glove on the right hand and some pulled bulbs by reaching from behind the
reflector. I didn't see any dark slides sticking out.
(BTW, I have a unit that triggers the shutter from the flash, but it wasn't
a common press camera.) >> Stay informed about: The Aviator (again) |

A lot of cameras were adapted to use solenoid flash
synchronizers. The first shutters with built in flash
synchronization came out after WW-2, before that the
solenoid was about the only way to work syncronized.
Solenoids date from around the mid 1930s. Some were mounted
on the camera, some were mounted on the battery case and
operated the shutter through a cable release.
Solenoids were also often used as a convenient way to
trip the shutter even when flash was not used. Not having
seen the movie I can't say if what you saw was actually a
mistake or not but it could be authentic. What bothers me in
movies is when the actors playing photographers obviously
have no idea of even how to point the thing. Of course, that
means the director doesn't either.
They might as well have a cardbox with a baggage tag
reading "Press Camera".

Great image, Richard. Let's not leave out the hat with the front brim bent
back, and a fat stubby cigar, too.
The flash unit I was speaking of works by the priniciple of the magneto. You
wind it up a turn and press the trigger on the back of the flash. A cam
inside the presses the shutter release as the bulb is fired. Pretty cool.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: The Aviator (again) |

The one that I laughed at was (I forget the movie) they were shooting with a
4X5 and while looking through the ground glass they "fired" the shot and
you could see the flash light up the people on the ground glass..

I've seen that same effect in at least two TV advertisement campaigns. One
I remember it was a wedding scene. Very stupid...

And don't forget the sound of the motor-drive when the actor
trips the shutter on an 8x10.

The ultimate in photographic idiocy has to be 'The Governess'.
The movie's idiocy extends to farther than just photography.
I recomend _not_ watching it.

The one I like is CSI with the digital camera shooting the murder site
and the audio guy cues the "mirror slap, shutter wiz, rewind sound"
off of track 837. It isn't important, its just entertainment........<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: The Aviator (again) |

Ah, did you know that such a sound-effect is a real menu-option on some
digital cameras?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: The Aviator (again) |

Kalart built a synchronizer like this. Its like a box on
a cable release. The box has two contacts on it. It was
meant to be plugged into a Kalart battery case. When the
plunger was operated it closed the contacts firing the bulb
and operated the cam toggle which then tripped the shutter
through the cable. I have a couple of the synchronizer units
but not the entire assembly. This arrangement could be used
on any shutter without adding a solenoid. Kalart later made
a reverse version to operate shutters with strobe. The idea
being that the strobe contacts were delayed long enough to
allow the shutter to come fully open. I've got advertising
for these but have never seen one. It would still be useful.
