There is an old fable that goes something like

hand a man a hunk of fish and you've fed him for a meal

teach a man to fish and you've fed him for a lifetime

Often my answers fit the latter. In my response to the gentleman with the
question about moving a lens from one shutter to another I could have given him
a specific answer to that specific question. Instead, my answer gave him the
info to answer that specific question and to make a similar comparison with
different shutters at some future point in time. It also told everyone else how
to make the measurements for any two shutters that they might have.

OK, then: why didn't you give me the specific answer? I *specifically* ASKED
for that. (Read the post.) I did not ask for a lecture in
optics/physics/machining. I did not ask for a 10-step program to becoming a
better human being/photographer/whatever. I did not ask to learn how to fish.
I asked a very simple specific question--a yes-or-no question.

Your answer was not what I was looking for.

Next!

Actually you asked 2 questions (see below), he attempted to answer the
second one and gave his opinion on the subject which you seem to know
nothing about and ASKED for general info.

"2. Which leads to the general question: how critical is cell spacing,
anyhow?
This is in reference to fixed lenses, not front-cell focusers. I've heard
that it's not super-critical, but how the hell would I know?"

Then why did you ask the question? A troll hopeing for Steve to answer so
you could attack him once again? -YAWN-

No, asshole: I asked the first question because I actually have some of this
stuff (shutters and lenses) and wanted to see FROM SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY KNOWS
whether a lens from one shutter would fit another shutter. Simple question,
simple answer.

It's not as if the Compur shutters or the Tessar lenses are some exotic pieces
of equipment that would require a team of NASA engineers crawling all over
them with electron microscopes and digital calipers and such. Someone who
ACTUALLY KNEW the answer to this SIMPLE question could simply give it; you
said you knew yourself, so that would have been a small but useful service you
could have performed. And indeed, if you do have the simple answer to this
simple question--either "yes, it will fit" or "no, it won't fit", then I'd be
duly appreciative of having it.

I specifically asked the question because I didn't want to measure cell
spacing with a caliper, nor with any other instrument: I was hoping to draw
upon the expertise of someone with sense enough to give me the SIMPLE ANSWER
to my SIMPLE QUESTION.

Ah, but I forgot: this be Usenet. My bad.

Tsk,......rather pathetic, it's hand a man a fish you' ve feed him for a day.
Hand a man a pole and teach him to fish and you have feed him for life.
Or in your case paint a man's hand with sh*t and all he has to do is wash it.
It's interesting that my father ( who I respected alot, once asked If I wanted my palm red)
were upon he produced a paint brush and slapped red paint on my
hand when I replied yes. If one was to read your palm they would see
a man that makes no secret of his "crappy" self importance or disregard for those
who express a opinion contrary your own in public.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I've had my disagreements with Mr. Simmons from time to time but there is
nothing in his responses that deserves this kind of personal attack. This
is supposed to be a place where large format photography equipment is
discussed, not a forum to conduct a vendetta against someone who made a
good faith effort to answer a question (and did it pretty well too).

BTW, since we're being picky about the precise wording of the fish and pole
adage, it's not "you've feed him for a day" nor is it "you have feed him for
life." You might also note that the word is "whereupon," not "were upon,"
the clause is "a lot," not "alot," and most people close parenthetical
phrases at the end of the phrase, not at some arbitrary point in the middle
of the sentence.

What he said. Why people feel this need to ATTACK Steve is beyond me. David
and a few others seem to just wait for him to say ANYTHING and jump all

I dont know Brian, I read the response and it neither gave information
on how to measure the cell separation or data as to the manufacturing
cell separation. Telling someone, measure with calipers is like
teaching someone to drive by telling him to get in the car and turn
the key clockwise. There is a lot of info missing. OTOH I do agree
that No1inparticular's answer is off base. Then again Simmons is in
this kind of mess every other week arguing inconsequential things
simply because people do not agree with him. Seeing the same flame war
over and over with different words and the same participants makes
this a rather boring group.

I do have to admit tho, that rarely have I seen someone draw as much
animosity as Simmons does on this site. I suppose it must be
excruciating to know that you are always right and have lesser beings
on this group disagree with you..Smile<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Steve, I think the reason people like to give you a hard time on here is
that you sometimes come across as kind of condescending, and maybe also the
sort of odd way you quote people's articles with the ">>>>>>>>>" and all.
If you want the personal stuff to stop, you could try to "fit in" better,
or just accept that the internet is a harsh place.

Hi, i actually did get out a micrometer and post the answer to the question
earlier this afternoon. I guess it may have not gotten posted or something.
Anyway, I don't think the spacing is close enough. It was over 1/10th inch
different between my rimset and dialset compurs. This was just with an old
analog micrometer.

Thanks, I appreciate that. Probably newsgroup server lag (on my ISP's servers).

Sounds like a no go.

Now doesn't this tell us something right there: how is it that this one person
(S. Simmons) draws so much criticism and ire? Is it just because he's an easy
target, or a poor innocent victim of Usenet outrage?

Common sense [1] would tell us that it *might* have something to do with his
own behavior.

I think the primary cause is that Steve's posting behavior is fixed and
invariant. He seems to be absolutely immune to criticism, even well-deserved
criticism given in a spirit of helpfulness. For some strange reason, this
tends to infuriate people.

[1] Yes, yes, I know: "common sense" doesn't exist, sense is uncommon, etc.
You know what I mean.
