Thanks for the kind words.

The image prints very well at 11x14.

That's a lot better. The first one was seriously bad at full res.

The sky color and water color aren't my cup of tea, but it is a nice shot.

They look exactly identical to me.

Never mind the colour, what about complete lack of any real world
detail?

Here's my take on it: It's not bad for a little P&S camera. My old
Canon S400 could have done the same, maybe even slightly better. I
keep it in the car with me all the time in case an opportunity pops up
for a photo.

But if I know I'm going somewhere like Alcatraz and am going to have
the opportunity to get some good shots, I'd be very upset with myself
for being in the right place at the right time (as you obviously were
to get a nicely lit shot like that) but not have the right tool to
capture it properly. The camera/lens I'd have had there would at
least have been able to capture that sign on the right well enough to
read. It probably says something like "Warning - No anchoring here"
and some other stuff. But we'll never know from that picture.

And if it could capture the lettering on that sign, the entire picture
would look a lot better.

There's simply not sufficient resolution to capture that sign clearly --
it's only 40x40 overall, and individual letters are about 4x2. To be
able to capture the lettering clearly, I would have had to make a much
higher res pano. (I toyed with the pano idea briefly, but just didn't
have enough time.) Here's a much larger image of the sign:

John, I'm not trying to be unkind, just saying how I see the image, as you
posted it for comment.

Indeed, the eye is very forgiving, and doubtless viewed at a "normal"
viewing distance a print would be acceptable.

Cheers,
David

That last refers to the image I posted later -- the first image was a
workflow experiment that got uploaded by mistake.

I actually posted it just for interest (saying nothing about comments),
primarily because I thought both the lighting and cloud formation were
notable. Technical criticism was your idea. Wink But no offense taken.
I was really just observing how all the feedback here (speaking in
general, not about you in particular) has been technical nitpicking, in
part from apparent anti-compact camera bias, in part simply way off the
mark (as in the case of the sign lettering -- when you discover a camera
and lens that can render letters clearly in a 4x2 cell let me know and
I'll snap it up:) Real photo critique (subject, composition, framing,
lighting, etc.) or assessment was nonexistent.

My own eyes aren't all that forgiving, and the print is actually very
good, even at inspection distance. Smile

Hi, I scroll through the messages here once in a while and clicked on your
links above, but I can't get the jpg. It shows Image Shack at the top of the
page and there is a big white box which says:
img103.imageshack.us/my.php?image=alcatrazislandix7.jpg at the top with a
small red X in a square which usually means you can't see the picture. I
also copied and pasted your URL into my browser but same result. It makes me
wonder why I can't see the picture.

When I checked out the second link, it had a lot more detail. Now it's
looking ugly and the first one's gone. Maybe I was halucinating.

I just checked, and the image came in fine.
Perhaps there was a temporary server problem.
