The price difference between the two cameras is about US$500-600, which is a
decent amount of money. Only you can decide whether the extra features of
the 20D are worth it. For me, they were. But as you say, "For me, I am sure
both cameras would take fine photos" so it sounds like you might already
have your answer - the XT is cheaper. Then again, if you're going to bolt a
US$1,700 piece of glass to the front of it, perhaps money isn't such an
object! The 20D is undoubtedly a superior camera.

This idea of what is "current" and what is going to be replaced soon is
cropping up more and more in this newsgroup and is starting to get on my
nerves! Accept that *everything* is going to be replaced soon - this is
about *photography* for goodness sake, not investment or posing toys!
Current DSLR technology is edging forwards only very slightly these days.
The next model might have a slightly bigger screen, start up 0.1 seconds
faster or something, but it's mostly marketing you're seeing. Buy what you
want now from what is available now and get out shooting. Or go and sit in
a room somewhere and wait for your life to pass you by!

If you're after a 70-200 2.8 IS L lens for your telephoto I suspect you're
going to be disappointed with the kit lens. The 17-85 is a dramatic
improvement, but I went the whole hog and got a 17-40mm L.
Someone on here said that there's not much point in buying low to medium
level glass if you really want L stuff and will shortly end up replacing
your initial purchases anyway. Seemed like sound advice to me.

That's what I did. I haven't regretted it.

I've never used a flash and don't intend to anytime soon, so I can't help
there.
